The North Staffordshire Railway employed large numbers of medium sided goods wagons with centre doors for all manner of traffic; in particular crated pottery, machinery and beer barrels. The Diagram 14 can be considered to be a larger version of the earlier D12, it was a large wagon being 17' 11" long and 8' wide externally. The D14 was built at Stoke and by a number of external builders immediately prior to and after the Great War. Several hundred wagons were built annually during this period. They were fitted with oil axle boxes and either side brakes from new, typical of the forward looking attitude of the North Staffordshire in the Adams era. Full details of this wagon, like all most NSR rolling stock is obscure because of a fire at Derby which destroyed much of the records. Many wagons survived into the LMS and most probably the early days of British Railways although it is doubtful that any survived into the late 1950's. The 51L wagon model is based on drawing number 1911 of March 1913.
