The NER were one of the pioneers of the hopper wagon. The central division of the NER, loosely based on what was the 'Stockton & Darlington Railway', developed a standard pattern vehicle with end brake levers. The basic design was kept in production for around 40 years with minor changes to the running gear and other small detailing. The later versions were all rated at 11 tons capacity, although it is believed that some may have had slightly smaller capacity. The model is based on the 5 plank body with No 2a grease axleboxes as built in 1905. By 1911 there were over 11,000 vehicles of this type in service; by the time of grouping, in 1923, this had dropped to less than 8,000. Many are known to have survived to the late 1930's or early 1940's. Predominantly these vehicles would have been used in the coal traffic, but some were used for other mineral traffic, such as sandstone or slag /spoil removal. Some of these vehicles were in private ownership working for the National Coal Board and may well have survived well beyond 1950. |
