Cattle traffic was a mainstay of small railway goods yard revenue prior to the Great War. Each railway had their own ideas of the ideal cattle wagon. This created many variations, although most centred around a conventional 9' wheel base wagon of around 10 tons capacity. The North Eastern had a substantial fleet of medium wagons, the Diagram K1. The basic design dates back to the late 1890's and examples were still being built after grouping in 1923. Cattle traffic gradually reduced in the face of strong competition from road transport after the Great War especially on short haul movements. This trend had become very significant by the 1930's resulting in lost revenue to the railways. At grouping the the North Eastern transferred over 2000 vehicles of this
pattern, by 1940 the number had dropped to 700, the majority of which
were unfitted. The LNER preferred the long wheel base fitted pattern as
opposed to the LNER's medium sized cattle wagon, the majority of which
were unfitted. The early versions of the Diagram K1 were built with no6
grease axleboxes, with a single brake lever operating 2 brake shoes on
one side only. From around 1902 new wagons were fitted with the Morton
duplex brake and the 2a type of grease axle box. As wagons were refitted
or repaired from 1910 onwards, the axleboxes would have been replaced
with oil boxes. 51L produces 3 versions of the NER Diagram K1, representing both early and later prototypes and a fully fitted version. The early model features grease 2a axleboxes, with a choice of single brake lever or Morton Duplex brake levers. The later model features 1D oil axleboxes and Morton Cam levers. Lastly we supply a fully fitted version. Items required to complete the model:-
