The Diagram G2 dates back to 1903, and superseded the earlier pattern Diagram G1 van. The model is based on a drawing dated in 1908, and is representative of vehicles built at that time, although with reference to suitable photographs it could be adjusted to represent any of the many thousands of this prototype that were built. This vehicle incorporated various changes including:-
This vehicle was built both during North Eastern & LNER ownership, and many thousand were built, indeed it was the most numerous van acquired by the LNER at the time of grouping. In 1940 over 4000 of these vehicles were still being used, although by the time British Rail took over the LNER several years later this had dropped to 1,900. It is known that these vehicles stayed in revenue service throughout the 1950's, although it is doubtful that many, if any, survived to the 1960's. G2 vans roamed far and wide and are often to be seen in the back of goods yard photographs. A review of this model may be found here. |
