Pricing and availability

The Diagram G1 dates back to 1886, and is one of the earliest covered goods vans known to be produced in large quantities. Invariably these were allocated to finished goods or traffic which had to be kept dry. In the earlier days some of the vans were used as 'Road Vans' or 'Yeast Vans' and were suitably branded. After the introduction of the G2 van from 1902 the yeast and road vans were reallocated to general traffic.

As originally built the G1 van would be fitted with 'Morton Duplex' brake gear, ie with the same end brake lever arrangement, or possibly a single sided brake gear; and grease axleboxes. Later construction was fitted with 'Morton Cam' brake gear. These vehicles would be seen anywhere throughout the UK, with particular emphasis on the NER's home territory and surrounding areas, eg Scotland, Northern England and the English Midlands.

These vans had a long service life, although with the introduction of the G2 pattern van, the G1 was gradually phased out or relegated to non revenue earning service, with very few surviving into the 1930's. Although we have seen photographs indicating that at least one G1 van was fitted with a roof door, it is believed few if any were introduced into revenue service.
