Between 1908 and 1916 the NER built 245 vehicles of this pattern, the first coming into revenue service in 1909. These vehicles were much modified over the years, with some being converted to refrigerator vans (50 by 1923), some to insulated and some to fish vans. Few details of these conversions have been located and verified. It is known that 233 of this type were still in service in their various guises in 1938. By 1948 the numbers had dropped to 134, comprising of 106 of the original pattern perishable van, 18 as refrigerated van, 5 as insulated vans and a further 5 as fish vans. Although we do not know the precise withdrawal dates of these vehicles we do not believe that any would have survived into the 1960's.
