The NER built 550 vehicles to diagram F6, between 1906 and 1908 with a further batch of 400 in 1922/23. These vans were built to replace the Diagram C1 open fish truck. Primarily these vans were used to transport fish from Hull, Grimsby and the other major fishing ports on the North East coast to the markets primarily in the major conurbations such as London, Manchester, Birmingham as well as the more obvious towns and cities serviced directly by the NER, such as Leeds, Bradford and Sheffield. They were a significant part of the east cost fish traffic fleet, until the LNER introduced their own pattern of fish van in the mid 1930's. Thereafter these vehicles would be progressively withdrawn. Even with the introduction of the LNER vehicles 485 of this F6's were still on the LNER's books in 1938. However there was a steep attrition during the early 1940's leaving 374 in 1944. British Railways acquired more than 230 vehicles in 1946, however by 1948 the numbers had dropped to just 122. It is doubtful that any of these vehicles would have survived much beyond that period, especially after British Railways introduced the 'Blue Spot' pattern fish van in the early 1950's. The vans were fitted with 'Westinghouse' and vacuum brake systems and
steam pipes for through working on passenger trains. The 'Westinghouse'
equipment was removed in the 1930's by the LNER. |
