Single bolster wagons with the new patent swivelling bolster were introduced
in 1902 and allocated to D2. Several hundred wagons were constructed during
the next year or two. Whilst there is no record of further building it
is thought a possibility that some D1 built thereafter were in fact built
with swivelling bolsters and are more properly described therefore as
D2. (A photograph of a D2 type wagon at Huntingdon North in 1952 could
be such a vehicle.) Frequently seen in pairs, threes or more this type of wagon was used to carry all manner of long loads. Loads could included timber, steel products, rails, fabricated steel work and boilers. These vehicles had a long life of up to thirty years and travelled the length and breadth of the country transporting goods from the manufacturers of the North East. |
