Single bolster wagons were used on the North Eastern Railway from the earliest days. Indeed there origin can be traced back to the Stockton and Darlington Railway. Originally built with dumb buffers and single shoe wooden brake block on one side, the D1 single bolster running gear changed substantially over the years; in contrast the body changed remarkably little.

In the period 1889 - 1894 the D1 had round faced no 6 axleboxes which were changed to no 2 from 1894 to 1903. Thereafter the oil axle box was used. Brake gear was initially single shoe single side, changing to two shoe single side and around 1897 to Morton Duplex (levers same end) . From 1906 the Morton cam brake was used. The bolster used by the north eastern changed in 1907 to the steel pattern with oak rubbing pad. Many wagons were modified during routine maintenance or repair with uprated axleboxes , brake gear and the steel bolster. Many hundreds of D1 were built over its long period of build and survivors were still in traffic in the late 1950's.

The D1 was used for the transport of all manner of long loads including timber, steel products, rails, fabricated steel work and boilers. These vehicles had a long life of up to thirty years and this longevity was pronounced in the north east where tight curves in ship yards and other factories precluded the use of long wheel base stock. Many on retirement found useful work as internal user vehicles in the extensive dock yards operated by the North Eastern at Hartlepool, Tyne Dock, Middlesbrough and Hull. Several were converted as runner wagons or for use by the engineers.
