The NER introduced the diagram C10 open wagon in 1908 to replace the aging fleet of C2 8 ton open goods wagons which were proving to have insufficient capacity for the increasing levels of traffic. The NER had a pressing requirement to expand the open freight fleet and this 12 ton design was very successful, with over 22,600 being built. By 1940 there were still over 18,700 in service with the LNER, although this had dropped to a mere 8,091 at the time of absorption into British Rail. Given the numbers, many of these vehicles would have seen revenue service in the 1950's and it is conceivable that some will have struggled on to the 1960's. However they would undoubtedly be war weary and look somewhat decrepit! Not with standing the large numbers of vehicles constructed, only a few minor changes were introduced. Around 1918 the NER introduced a ribbed buffer in place of the plain buffers that had been common practice on the NER up to that point. These vehicles would have traveled the length and breadth of the country, especially after the introduction of the common user scheme. Photographic evidence shows C10s in service on the Great Western.
