In 1904, recognising the need to carry relatively bulky but light loads, the NER converted 101 Diagram C2 wagons by adding metal frames supporting an iron mesh cage. From the photographic evidence it looks as if the conversion was made to older vehicles fitted with the No 6 grease axleboxes and single brake levers. Withdrawal dates are unknown, however, we suspect that these elderly vehicles with flimsy cages were expensive to maintain and few survived beyond the end of the Great War. This distinctive vehicle may have been seen throughout the country but more commonly on home territory.
