The NER started building 8t open wagons in the early 1880's. The wagon register, completed in 1893, described them as 'High Goods' wagons. The C2 pattern evolved in the late 1880's into this prototype as built from 1890. Some earlier wagons were used for fish traffic until the building of the Diagram C1 fish truck. This version was fitted and had clasp brakes.

The C2 was the main type of open wagon until the higher rated Diagram C9 & C10 wagons were introduced in 1908. In 1911 over 11,000 open wagons were in service, the majority would have been C2 vehicles.

As originally built in 1893 the C2 had a single brake lever, 2 'V iron and two brake shoes fitted to one side and early pattern grease axle boxes. In 1897 the NER adopted the 'Morton Duplex' brake lever arrangement for these vehicles with levers at the same end. From 1900 onwards diagonal strapping was added along with no 6 axle boxes and the load increased to10 tons. The Morton Cam brake was adopted for all new build in1906.

It is likely that Morton cam brake gear would have been retrofitted when undergoing substantial repairs or rebuilding along with the later version of axlebox. In 1904 the NER converted 101 of these vehicles to the Diagram C3 caged wagon.

These vehicles had a hard service life of 20-30 years, but would few would have survived much into the LNER. We doubt any vehicles would have made it to the 1930's. These vehicle would have been seen all over the country a must for the pre-group model railway.
