Built from 1896 to 1903, a total of 652 of these open trucks were constructed. The slatted sides improved ventilation and the sliding doors loading: considerable improvements over the 8t wagon based on the Diagram C2 used previously. Some wagons were allocated to particular stations. Often seen marshaled next the engine in passenger trains the C1 was fully fitted with both vacuum and Westinghouse brakes and steam pipes. C1's are also known to have had a wide range of braking systems including vacuum and Westinghouse fitted, vacuum braked, vacuum braked and Westinghouse piped. The C1 was gradually replaced by the Diagram F6 fish van but withdrawal did not start seriously till after the Great War. It is believed that the C1 was mostly gone by 1926 and extinct the following year.
