The NER had a substantial traffic conveying steel plate from the rolling mills to the shipyards and factories of the North East and further afield. Many designs of plate wagons were introduced over the years, the Diagram B12 in 1911. LNER records indicate that it acquired over 1300 vehicles from the NER in 1923. In the late 1920's, with the collapse of shipbuilding in the depression many of these vehicles were reallocated to alternative traffic. The large flat load bed and high carrying capacity could be effectively used for a variety of traffic, such as machinery and agricultural equipment. No 78686 for example was legended 'Return to Ipswitch'. Other variations included modifications to carry larger plates by removing the sides and adding 20' trestles. Vehicles modified in this way included G498, 76019 in 1914, in 1920 at least 5 more were converted this time by adding 27' trestles, the numbers being 14710, 17225, 75879, 79013 and 80886.
