Like all railways the NBR had a substantial demand for high quality coal for use in the locomotive fleet. In 1920 the NBR realised that their existing practice of using ordinary mineral wagons was inefficient. An order for a total of 510 purpose built wagons to diagram 119 was made, 200 from Hamilton Wagon Company in 1920, a further 250 from Pickerings in 1921 and the balance from their own works. Because of the nature of these vehicles, ie a dedicated specialist wagon, they had long service lives. Over 400 were handed over to British Rail in 1948, many of which survived well into the 1950's and some stragglers lasted until the demise of steam power in the late 1960's. They were seen all over the mainline network of the NBR, wherever there was a requirement for loco coal and of course in transit to and from the colliery.
