The open wagon provided the means of transporting raw materials, such as cotton bales, crated goods, barrels etc that were the major part of the general merchandise traffic on most railways. The NBR built the Diagram 109 between 1914 to 1915 to service this traffic. Despite the short period of construction it is believed that several hundred of this pattern were built. These vehicles were the next step in the evolutionary chain in the NBR General Merchandise fleet. They are a little larger than the earlier Diagram 90 wagon with a higher freeboard for merchandise. The service life of this type of vehicle was around 30 years and it is doubtful that many would have survived beyond the mid 1950's. These vehicles would have been a common sight on throughout the country. |
