Pricing and availability

This model is based on a General Arrangement diagram of 1910 (Ref 635W). An initial batch of 40 vehicles (20 pairs) were built by Hurst Nelson in 1911, with Cowlairs building a further batch of 40. The wagon has grease axleboxes with independent single brake shoes / levers on either side of the vehicle. The wagons were permanently coupled as a pair, and would not have been part of the 'common owner' pooling system. Usually these vehicles would be legended 'return to XXXX' - the point of loading, such as Blochairn. Nominally these vehicles were designed for iron bar transport, although they were used for transporting any lengthy load, such as timber or other types of steel product.

These would have been a common sight in the industrial heartland of Scotland and spreading as far south as the Borders for the timber traffic. Some may have ventured further south, especially during the First World War. The design life for this pattern of vehicle is at least 30 years, although we believe that few of these vehicles would have survived much beyond 1945.
