The open wagon provided the major means of transporting raw materials, such as cotton bales, crated goods, barrels etc that consisted of the general merchandise traffic on the railways. The NBR built this 10 ton example in substantial quantities from 1904 up to 1914 to service this traffic. The service life of this type of vehicle was around 30 years and it is doubtful therefore that many would have survived much beyond the late 1940's. It is believed that the vast majority were scrapped before 1940 as transport demands led to the introduction of more covered goods transport. These vehicles would have been a common sight on across the NBR network in Scotland and surrounding areas and would have been seen throughout the borders and Northern England. Some may have had more extended 'excursions' further south especially down the East Cost mainline both before grouping and after the introduction of the common user agreement.
