Like the Caledonian Railway Diagram 16, these
wagons were the ultimate example of robust specialist short haul, high
load vehicles. Originally designed for the transport of iron from the
foundry to steel or rolling mills these vehicles found a use shifting
bulky or heavy goods throughout the country from the Scottish industrial
heartland. Photographic evidence shows these wagons at Bradford on wool
traffic for example. The early examples were built at the turn of the
century, having many similarities to the Diagram 29 wagons which preceded
them. Although most vehicles would have been scrapped by the mid 1930's
some are known to have survived into the 1940's and may have, just, reached
BR ownership.
