TThe NBR introduced the 10ton van in 1906 and this became the standard van for the NBR until 1923. The van was equipped with sliding doors and oil axleboxes from new and was a striking wagon for the period. Brakes were originally single shoe brakes on one side but examples with single shoe on both sides, through to either side brakes were produced. Many hundreds of these vans were built by both the North British at Cowlairs and by outside contractors including 10 in 1911, 250 in 1912, 76 in 1916 and some 200 in 1920. The service life of this type of vehicle was around 30 years and it is known that many survived into the LNER and some were in traffic in 1960. These vehicles were a common sight across the NBR network in Scotland and surrounding areas; photographic evidence shows them virtually anywhere in the country.
