The open wagon provided the major means of transporting raw materials, such as cotton bales, crated goods, barrels etc that were the major part of the general merchandise traffic on most railways. The NBR built this example from 1905 up to 1916 to service this traffic. The original pattern was rated at 8 tons capacity (Tare 5.0.0.), later versions were re-rated to 10 tons (Tare 5.4.0). Early prototypes had fixed sides and ends, however it was soon realised that this created problems when used for general merchandise traffic, later versions had a full height door fitted to the centre of the vehicle. The service life of this type of vehicle was predicted around 30 years and therefore it is doubtful that many would have survived much beyond the mod 1940's. It is believed that the vast majority were scrapped before 1940 as transport demands led to the introduction of more covered goods transport. These vehicles would have been a common sight on across the NBR network in Scotland and surrounding areas and would have been seen throughout the borders and Northern England. Some may have had more extended 'excursions' further south especially down the East Cost mainline both before grouping and after the introduction of the common user agreement. |
