Built from 1906, these semi elliptical roof carriages were on their introduction some of the finest around in the country . They were intended to be used for high density services and were designed to use the available loading gauge to the utmost. Indeed the first 69 D86 built were banned from "Scotch lines and MR". Subsequent build had a slightly revised roof form; smaller torpedo vents along the roof centre line, one either side of the gas lamp. Typically they were in sets of three, a lavatory composite or composite flanked by a brake third . In consequence they are often referred as LBL's (Leeds Bradford Liverpool) sets. In the Manchester area four carriage sets were often used with the addition of a full third. Three carriage sets were often strengthened with a fourth carriage immediately behind the engine. The basic design was 54' or 56'0" x 9'0" and a number of derivatives were introduced including variation in bogies which were up rated over the years from the 8' standard type to 8' wide frame bogie and later to 10' wide frame bogie. As built the carriages were gas lit but conversion to electric gathered pace after the Great War. However the work was far from complete by Grouping. Indeed some of these carriages were never converted and were the first to be scrapped in British Rail days. In all some 90 D86s, 10 D87s, 105 D94s and 155 D98s were built mainly
at Horwich but some by Metro C&W Co. Some carriages of each diagram
were dual fitted for working on Caledonian and North Eastern lines, the
numbers are not known but would have been less than corridor stock. We produce the following non-corridor carriages:
