Pricing and availability

Based on the Diagram 285 eight compartment third carriages made redundant when the Manchester Exchange Sets were reduced to three carriages in 1909. The M56 conversion involved reducing the number of compartments from eight to six, with two compartments altered to a combined driving/guards compartment and the fitting of control rodding and control apparatus. This enabled trains to work as part of a push/pull train on branch lines without turn round facilities.

As a further variant the LNWR introduced the M25 which was externally similar to the M56. However two compartments adjacent to the driving/guards compartment were altered to first class accommodation.

The Diagram M56 worked in the Willesden area and on the South Staffordshire lines between Walsall, Dudley & Lichfield. The M25 variant worked primarily in the Northampton area between Northampton, Bilsworth, Daventry & Warwick, but was also seen in the St Helens Area & on the Llanberis branch line. On the Northampton & Llanberis services the M25 was often paired with an M57 compartment third.
