Pricing and availability

In the early 1900's, to provide for the growing demand for passenger services to and from the Manchester and Birmingham areas, the LNWR created rakes of carriages which collectively became known as the 'Manchester' and 'Birmingham Exchange Sets'. For the Manchester sets the traffic was centred on services to and from Manchester primarily over the Leeds & Huddersfield areas in Yorkshire, Bolton & Wigan to the north of Manchester and Liverpool & St Helens to the North West of Manchester. The rakes were often used on excursion services from Manchester, particularly to the Fylde & North Wales coast.

W produce the following vehicles for these trains:

  • Diagram 110: 7 compartment first class carriages, 24 built between 1903 & 1904.
  • Diagram 182: 7 compartment composite carriage, 29 built between 1904 & 1907.
  • Diagram 285: 8 compartment third carriage, 73 built between 1903 & 1906.
  • Diagram 336: 6 compartment brake third, 33 built between 1903 & 1904.
  • Diagram 338: 5 compartment brake third, 82 built between 1904 & 1907.

Most of these carriages survived to the mid 1950's. Although we do not have comprehensive withdrawal dates for all vehicles it can be presumed that very few carriages would have survived much beyond 1958 when the last of the D182 composites were withdrawn.

The Manchester set, or rake, was marshaled:-

  • a brake third (D338)
  • two eight compartment third (D285)
  • a seven compartment first (D110)
  • a six compartment brake (D336)

The Birmingham Exchange Sets were marshaled in a similar manner using, with the Diagram 110 replaced with a Diagram 182 composite.

In 1909 the LNWR removed one of the Diagram 285 thirds to make three carriage sets. The extra Diagram 285's were progressively converted to Motor Driving Trailers for use in other areas.
