The final LNWR non corridor design was produced from 1913 onwards in irregular batches. Building was complete by 1923 when some 154 D333, 163 D176 and 93 D283 had been completed. An inter district set normally comprised four carriages, two D176 's sandwiched between two D333's. Another configuration was two brake thirds, D333, a D283 and a lavatory composite. The sets remained intact until around 1926/27 but longer in some cases. In the thirties a three carriage set was more usual with one D176 removed. Alternatively two carriage formations were used, created by splitting a set in half. These carriages worked the entire system and in LMS and BR days were often seen in conjunction LMS flush sided or pre-group stock.
