The D147 and 321 non corridor lavatory stock carriages were built at Wolverton in 1907, almost certainly as set trains. Some 10 D147's and 20 D321's were built and were used as three coach trains with a D147 in between two D321 brakes. They were used for semi fast services between Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester via the North Staffordshire line. Some trains consisted of two sets which combined or divided at Crewe. All 10 sets stayed in their original formation until Grouping except one which was disbanded in 1922. In 1922, with the introduction of the inter corridor sets, these carriages were transferred to the Central Wales line (4 sets), and The Northampton District (4 sets). In about 1923/4 these latter sets were redesignated Manchester Llandudno sets and renumbered. It would appear that all the sets were disbanded at around 1930 and the carriages became 'loose' vehicles. The D146 of which 85 were built at around the Great War period were used to strengthen trains and worked loose.
