Mineral wagons formed the largest portion of G&SWR wagon stock and were used to transport coal from the extensive Scottish coalfields. By 1910 there were 250 16t mineral wagons in service, comprising 1% of the total rolling stock, by 1922 the numbers had risen to 1741, comprising 9% of the rolling stock. The 16t mineral wagon was first produced in 1905. Various variations were produced over years these wagons were produced. 51L produces 2 distinct versions of this wagon which are supplied separately, a Steel underframe and a Flitch (steel plated timber) underframe. The steel underframe was often produced by outside manufacturers and was often equipped with the Morton cam brake. Mineral wagons of this pattern would have had a 30-40 year service life and would have survived well into British Railways ownership. Predominantly these wagons would seen transporting coal or iron ore or other mineral from the mines to Scottish cities and towns and the ports. Although there is no photographic evidence it is believed that they would be frequently seen in the North England and possibly as far south as North Wales and the English Midlands.
