Several of these gunpowder vans were built at Gorton in 1902. It is thought possible that a number had been built a few years previously by the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway. At least 15 are known to have been built, all were extinct by 1947. The van was of all metal riveted construction to an unusual design being some 15' in length with a low body height of 4' 5" and wheel base of 8' 6". Morton round bottomed axle boxes with Morton Cam brake were supplied from new. GCR gunpowder vans were painted a bright red making them a distinct vehicle. They were seen throughout the GCR system and North Wales.
