This distinctive model is based on a Caledonian drawing dated March 1913 and a sketch completed by Sir Eric Hutchinson, which was published in the November 1959 issue of Railway Modeller. The drawing makes reference to 4 orders placed over 8 years for a total of 100 wagons. Expected service life for these vehicles is at least 20 years of continual service, we have no withdrawal dates, although it is known many vehicles survived grouping and it is conceivable that some of the later batch may have survived into the mid 50's but probably not in British Rail livery. The principle service area would be in the central Scottish belt, although it would not be unusual to see these vehicles on the 'West Coast Routes' and more widely after Grouping in 1923.
