Like the North British 'diagram 82' wagon these 'Pig Iron' wagons were the ultimate example of specialised short haul, high load robust vehicles. Originally designed for the transport of iron from the foundry to steel rolling mills these vehicles found a use for shifting bulky or heavy goods throughout the country from the Scottish industrial heartland. The early examples were built at the turn of the century with grease axleboxes, being rated at 8 tons (subject of a separate kit). The later examples represented by this kit were rated at 14 tons, and fitted with Irrasier axleboxes and self-contained buffers. Original equipment for these vehicles was the single lever single shoe brake, although vehicles built after 1911, or rebuilt after that date had the either side system applied. Although most vehicles would have been scrapped by the mid 1930's some are known to have survived into the early 1940's.

Made from white metal our model has separate sides, ends, Irrasier grease axleguards and white metal self contained buffers. An embossed plastic floor is supplied. Parts to make either the single sided single shoe brake system or dual lever as required after 1911 are included. A comprehensive instruction sheet with detailed lettering and painting information is supplied. Items required to complete the model:-

• Wheels: 12mm diameter open spoke wheels.
• Paint - we recommend Precision Paint or in some cases Humbrol Acrylic: see Caledonian wagon liveries for product numbers.
• Three link couplings.
• Transfers - we recommend HMRS or Caledonian Railway Association, see Caledonian wagon liveries for product numbers.
