The origin of the Diagram 15 can be traced back to 1872 but it was only at the 20th century reorganisation of the diagram book that dropside wagons became Diagram 15. Dropside wagons were allocated to the General Merchandise fleet, and provided the backbone of the Caledonian fleet for many years. The early examples were rated at 8 tons capacity, later examples were re-rated at 10 tons. After 1911 all new build, or refurbished vehicles were fitted with either side brake gear in place of the original pattern single shoe brake gear. However wagons could have single shoe either side or two shoe one or two sided brake gear. How many vehicles were fitted with either side break gear is not known. These vehicles would be a common sight throughout the UK and especially near a major terminus or goods yard. One appears in a photograph of a Cambrian Railways breakdown train in 1920! Although built in large numbers few would have survived into the 1940's.
