This was the standard design of fitted iron stone wagon some 17' 6" in length and 10' 3 1/2" high of all welded construction. The vehicle had a wheel base of 10' and was fitted with roller bearings and 13" self contained buffers from new. The vacuum cylinders were fitted at one end platform with a pipe running down one side above the side hopper supports. Some 200 were built. During their long life many wagons were altered with buffers changed to Oleo types anfd axle boxes up rated to roller types. Iron stone wagons were initially used for iron ore transport but as' tippler' wagons were introduced and iron ore imported wagons were displaced to other traffic. This included sand, clinker, sulphate and limestone for example. Some wagons were altered to include tarpaulin supports for clinker or sand traffic. During their life many wagons were uprated from 24 tons to 33.5 tons without alteration. The Diagram 1/168 wagons were a conversion of D1/163 wagons to vacuum brake for clinker traffic in 1971. Some 82 wagons were converted many but not all had a change of buffers to Oleo types and roller bearings. Iron stone wagons were to be seen throughout the country in small numbers or in complete trains.
