On the date of its formation in 1948 British Rail acquired the rolling stock of virtually all railway companies in existence in the United Kingdom up to that date. There were a few notable exceptions; some specialist vehicles such as salt vans, although these were few and far between, and some ex private owner wagons in service with the recently formed National Coal Board.

Diagram 1/163, 1/166: iron stone hopper unfitted

Some 1500 were built all unfitted to lots 2733 and 3001 between 1955 and 1957 and a further 350 to 1/166 in 1958. Used for a variety of traffic including sand, sulphate and clinker as well as iron ore.

Some 200 fitted iron stone hopper wagons were built along with 82 conversions. This fleet lasted until the 1980's on a wide variety of traffic including, iron ore, sulphate, sand and clinker.
